How to create and manage custom categories in TimelyBills?

Custom category can be either created from the existing default categories or by creating completely new category.


To create a new custom category:

  1. Tap your Profile Picture in the top-left corner to open the menu.
  2. Select Categories to go to the categories section.
  3. The category list screen will open. By default, the Bills/Expenses tab is displayed.
  4. Tap the Add (+) icon in the top right corner to add any new category.
  5. Select the category type: Bills/Expenses or Income.
  6. Choose whether you want to create a Category or Subcategory, then tap Next.
  7. Enter the required details:
    • Category name
    • Category description
    • Choose icon (Image & Emoji are coming soon)
    • Choose icon color
    • Choose a Service Provider Type (for bill reminders) and a Merchant Type (for expenses)
      • Service Provider Type: Based on the selected service provider type, the relevant service providers will be shown when creating a bill reminder with this category.
      • Merchant Type: Based on the selected merchant type, the relevant merchant will be shown when creating a expenses with this category.
  8. Tap the Check Mark (✓) icon in the top-right corner to save the category.
  9. Redirected to the Category list screen, where your newly created custom category will be displayed.

To create a new custom category from existing default category:


1. go to category listing page

2. click on any of the default category or subcategory, which you want to change

3. From category detail page, click on edit icon (available at top right corner)

4. Now provide any custom name to your category / succategory.

5. As soon as you make the change the default category gets removed and only your new category appears.


Helpful Tips for Managing Categories

  • Switch to the Income tab to view and manage income categories. Please note that income categories do not support subcategories.

  • Categories with an arrow icon (⌄) indicate that subcategories are available. Tap the arrow to view existing subcategories or tap "Add Sub category" to create a new custom subcategory.

  • Tap on any category to access category details

  • Use the Hide toggle on the category detail screen to temporarily hide or unhide a category without deleting it.

  • Select the Pencil (Edit) icon to update category attributes such as the icon, icon color, service provider type (for Bills), or merchant type (for Expenses).

  • Enable the Show Hidden Categories toggle on the Category List screen to view categories that have been hidden.

  • Only custom categories and custom subcategories can be deleted. System-defined categories are protected and cannot be removed.

  • Deleted custom categories are displayed in the Deleted Categories section at the bottom of the Category List screen and are highlighted in red for easy identification.
